About Us
St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E.), a church in pilgrimage, is currently at its third location since its inception in 1895. The first location was 33 Chestnut Street, a wooden structure called "The Little Wooden Church on the Hill."

In 1944, fire destroyed old St. Mark, and for more than a year, the resolute members held services in the Morris Brown College Chapel. On a spirit-filled Sunday morning, Rev. A.J. Harris led the congregants to their 2nd location, 491 Chestnut Street, singing "We Are Marching to Zion."

In 1976, parishioners were led to our current home, 3605 Campbellton Rd., by Rev. Preston Warren Williams II, who is currently serving as the Presiding Prelate of the 6th Episcopal District of the AME Church. Several pastors have served since and the church continues to serve as an anchor along the Campbellton Rd. corridor in Southwest Atlanta.

Under the leadership of Rev. Larry W. Hudson, Sr., we modernized our facilities and focused on community outreach and Black entrepreneurship. Renovations included:

  • A 4,500 SF Education Building
  • The Elwood and Flora Molock Assembly Hall
  • A 4,500-lb capacity wheel-chair accessible elevator, and
  • A redesigned administrative office which includes a comfortable reception area, conference room, pastor's study and on-site bookstore.

In June 2014, Bishop Williams appointed Rev. Walter E. Daniels as our new shepherd. Though his tenure was short as the Pastor of St. Mark, under his leadership the ministerial staff enlarged, new ministries were developed including Women with a Purpose Ministry and the ministerial staff published a Lenten Devotional Booklet. Rev. Daniels served as pastor until his death on March 4, 2016.

On March 16, 2016, Bishop Williams appointed Rev. Bertram C. Smith as our new pastor, and we look forward to supporting the vision God has given him for the growth and expansion of this great church. We remain committed to fulfilling the mission of the AME church which is to minister to the social, spiritual and physical development of all people and fulfill  our founders' vision of engaging in the spirit of the original Free African Society.
